Avoiding Car Trunk Lock Problems

10/20/2015 Back To Blog

You press the button and open the car trunk. Then you simply push the lid down and your cargo is secure. But what if something goes wrong with the lock of the trunk? The lid may become stuck and you will require emergency trunk opening. It is true that the risk of such an accident can never be completely eliminated, but it can be minimized to the lowest possible level. The following measures will help you with this.

About Lock and Transponder Key Care

Avoiding Car Trunk Lock ProblemsIn most cases, urgent trunk opening is necessary due to the car key being locked inside. This issue is very easy to avoid. Carry your ignition key only in properly closed pockets or bags. Before you close the lid, inspect the contents of the trunk briefly. This simple routine will practically eliminate the risk of leaving your key and other important items inside.

You need to properly care for your car trunk lock. Inspect it on a regular basis, preferably every three months, along with all other car locks. Watch out for all possible times of physical damage. Look closely for traces of rust as this process can practically ruin the metal unless measures are taken timely. If you notice any issues, you must opt for lock repair without delay.

Another important task involved in regular maintenance is testing. If you have an electronic trunk lock with chip, you should check how well it works not only with the electronic transmitter, but with the metal blade as well. Insert the key into the lock and turn it in the direction for locking and then in the opposite one. If the device seems sticky and you need to use extra effort to operate the key, lubrication will be required. Get graphite-powder lubricant designed for locks and apply a small amount of it into the keyway of the lock and onto the blade. Then insert the key and turn it several times in both directions. This will allow for perfectly smooth lock performance.

You should provide care to the ignition car key as well. Keep it in a dry and clean place at all times. The chip unit, in particular, should never be exposed to direct sunlight for too long. Make sure that the key does not get scratched by other objects. You should clean it regularly using alcohol for the chip unit and lemon juice for the blade. Do not miss to inspect the blade for scratches, chipping and bending.

In case the trunk lock is severely damaged or it has become outdated, it should be changed right away. Opt for a more advanced replacement lock which will fit in the place of the old one for increasing the level of security.
